£940

Painted to depict an abstract chess board.

Part of an interesting group of East German artists who's output was increasingly in opposition to the GDR and more forward-looking to a unified state. This perhaps commenting on the struggle between Eastern and Western values.

Zitzmann studied at the Weimar University of Architecture & Fine Arts and read psychology, philosophy and art at Jena after WWII, becoming a prominent figure in the German art scene and a professor of art in 1965.

Germany, circa 1970
