The Century Guild were a group of designers and craftsmen who carried out various commissions for decorating and furnishing interiors. Members of the Guild included the architect, A.H. Mackmurdo, and Herbert Horne, a designer and collector. One of their commissions was for Pownall Hall, Cheshire, a house extended and refurnished by the owner, Henry Boddington. In 1886 Boddington commissioned interior decoration, panelling, metal light fittings and furniture from the Guild, these ceiling panels which were placed in the drawing room.

'The ceiling is divided into square panels containing hares, snipe, and fruit, painted in a scroll of citron leafage, relieved with soft blue and red.'
