Batterham apprenticed with the great Bernard Leach, where he met Atsuya Hamada, the son of Shoji Hamada, and took over the foot-operated Asian potter's wheel, which he worked on from then on.
He opened his Durweston studio in 1959 and worked there until he was 82.
Batterham's work has been shown internationally and is in collections worldwide.
