The three copper 4/3 shades with a patinated nickel socket housing, the underside of which stamped PAT. APPL. denoting the period of time while the patent had been applied for but was yet to be approved.

The 4/3 represents the shade size and combination for this light. Originally PH lights were created as 'whole' shade systems - a PH 3/3 or 4/4 or 5/5 and so on. The first number denotes the size of the upper shade (a 3 would mean 30cm diameter) and the second number denotes which lamp size the bottom two shades belong to (a 3 would denote the bottom two shades were the correct proportion 3/3 set). A 4/3, as in this case, means the top shade is 40cm diameter but the bottom shades have the dimensions of those of a 3/3 light. The shade combinations were endless and each mix would provide a different kind of light - more direct, more sideways, more diffused etc.
