A fine pair of George IV oak card tables attributed to Gillows

The rectangular tops with a moulded edge opening to reveal a baize surface above a carved frieze with tracery and scrolled floral motifs all supported on a cluster column on a waisted platform with four carved bulb feet on cup castors.

These tables are believed to be those directly commissioned from Pugin for Scarisbrick Hall. (A drawing found at the National Archive, for Scarisbrick Hall, echoes the design of these tables.)

A secretaire from the same suite of furniture can be found in Lancaster Castle museum (final image).

Scarisbrick Hall was remodelled between 1837 and 1845 to the designs of A.W.N. Pugin for Charles Scarisbrick. Scarisbrick Hall was Pugin's most important early commission.
