A fine Chippendale period George II mahogany tripod table

A fine Chippendale period George II mahogany tripod table

£5,400

The rectangular top with a moulded edge and scallop corners on a turning and height-adjustable brass pole inset into a gun barrel stem on three cabriole legs with unusual lapeted shoulders and pad feet. In the finest mahogany with wonderful colour.

Similar models were designed as 'music' or 'reading' tables by Thomas Chippendale. Pictured is a 'Reading Desk' supplied by Chippendale's workshop for Sir Rowland Winn at Nostell Priory between 1767 and 1769. Apart from the lapeted shoulders to the legs on our example, the base is strikingly similar. Various versions of these tables were made by London makers but the quality of construction, material and design of this table points to one of the more important workshops.

England, circa 1760s
