A sand picture of a castle attributed to George Lewis Haas
5261
Set in a landscape with trees and skilfully made from naturally coloured sands.
Probably German, late 19th century
Sand pictures have a long history in Britain; dating back to the 18th century when "table-deckers" would decorate dining tables with patterns of sand, glass, and other materials. In the 19th century, sand pictures evolved into professional art, as well as a hobby for ladies. German artist George Lewis Haas was known to produce sand pictures of landscapes (including some of Wales) that had some degree of relief to the surface.
