The upholstered raked body in its original black ox leather on splayed tubular steel legs.

Edition AP Stolen. Denmark, 1960-2

Wegner's Ox chair was way ahead of its time. Designed for AP Stolen in 1960, it represents a bold departure from the restraint of traditional Scandinavian design principles. Purportedly inspired by Picasso's abstract paintings of bullfighting, the chair's playful yet balanced design challenges the prevailing simplicity of its era. Crafted with a thin steel frame supporting a substantial body and a striking headrest reminiscent of ox horns, Wegner's inverted massing creates an illusion of weightlessness while providing versatile seating options. Upholstered in moulded foam, a revolutionary technique that allowed for organic, sculptural shapes, the condition of this example is remarkable given its perishable material. Production challenges led to a hiatus after only two years, resuming nearly three decades later with updated construction methods under Erik Jørgensen. Early examples like this are therefore incredibly rare and sought after. Despite modern advancements, crafting each chair remains a time-intensive process, highlighting the chair's enduring appeal and Wegner's personal attachment to it as his favourite easy chair.
