Noguchi was one of the 20th century's most important and critically acclaimed designers. His work spanned sculpture, gardens, furniture, lighting, architecture, landscapes and set designs.
Beginning his career as a sculptor and academic, he turned to modernism and abstraction when he fell under the spell - and tutelage - of Constantin Brancusi in Paris. In 1951, using traditional Japanese methods, he designed his famous Akari light sculptures.
