Covered in gold and polychrome embossed leather decorated with Japanese motifs, the edges decorated with small irons, with intertwined initials G and I to the front of the lid.
Paris, late 19th century.
The Susse Frères company was founded in 1758 in Paris, originally as a stationery business. It earned its letters of nobility in the art foundry. Today it is the oldest art foundry in France still in operation under the name Susse Fondeur.
Part of a limited series of leather boxes created in the Japanese style, likely commissioned by or for someone with initials G and I, or possibly as a celebration of marriage.
