Michael Niedermoser was a Viennese master cabinetmaker and a member of the Vienna Society for Arts & Crafts. His workshop, M. Niedermoser & Sohn, was active in Vienna from around 1880 to 1900, producing finely crafted furniture for the emerging avant-garde.
Neidermoser's practice reflects the 'designer-maker' model characteristic of late 19th century Vienna, in which the realisation of objects depended on close collaboration between academically trained designers and skilled craftsmen. He worked closely with designers including Josef Maria Olbrich, translating their conceptual designs into functional objects distinguished by their material quality and workmanship.
M. Niedermoser & Sohn can be understood as part of the craft foundation of the Viennese Art Nouveau and the Secessionist movement, reflecting the essential role of master craftsmen in shaping the transition from traditional cabinetmaking to early modern design.
Works by M. Niedermoser are now held in important public and private collections worldwide, including a significant holding at the MAK Museum of Applied Arts.
