An exceptional pair of William IV giltwood elbow chairs attributed to Gillows
5537
Each with a cartouche shaped upholstered back framed with giltwood scrolls above an upholstered seat. With scrolling upholstered arms on four cabriole legs with cup castors.
England, c. 1833
These chairs relate to a similarly designed suite supplied for the Whistlejacket Room at Wentworth Woodhouse, South Yorkshire, as well as the drawing-room created by the architect Lewis Wyatt at Tatton Park, Cheshire, both in 1833, by the manufacturer Gillows & Co. These carved and gilded Neo-Rococo designs are quite different from the majority of the simpler furniture ascribed to the Lancaster firm, and were most probably completed by Gillow & Co. of Oxford Street, London, between 1830 - 1839.
