The Chiavari chair, named after the Ligurian town of Chiavari, east of Genoa, where it was created, was first designed in 1807 by joiner Giuseppe Gaetano. The chair was commissioned by Marquis Stefano Rivarola and was to be based on a Louis XV model he had seen in France. The original design, known as the 'Campanino,' was refined and reduced over time by local makers, resulting in a variety of lightweight versions, collectively known as Chiavari chairs. In the 1950s, the style was modernised, most famously with Gio Ponti's 'Superleggera.'
