Dufrene was an esteemed decorative artsist in the Art Nouveau period, heading up the Maitrise Workshop of the Galeries Lafayette. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons, designing a wide range of decorative arts and interiors but best known for his exciting and innovative design. His philosophy is embodied in his statement that 'The same chair... is to be found in almost every country... It is the anonymous, neutral universal chair... that is the root cause of the great Dullness.'
