The lobed oval top with marquetry depicting birds on a branch among chestnut leaves, supported by trestle legs joined by a pierced panel of carved chestnut leaves.
France, circa 1900
An almost identical table was designed by Gallé for the 1900 Paris Exposition, where his display, which included an entire glass furnace, nearly ruined him financially.
Gallé was a renowned artist and designer in glass and furniture, considered to be one of the major innovators in the French Art Nouveau movement. He was a founding member of the Ecole Nancy.
He took over the family art glass business in 1874, reorganising and expanding the company with huge success. At the heart of his designs were themes of flora and fauna.
